Welcome to Chemistry

Chemistry plays an integral role in today's scientific endeavors. As science has become increasingly interdisciplinary, fundamental scientific problems focus on the chemical nature of matter.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry provide an environment where students at all levels can explore, discover, and learn chemistry through coursework and research.

Jeffrey Roberts joins the Purdue faculty as dean of Science

Jeffrey ROBertsJeffrey Roberts, chair of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota, has been named Purdue University's Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science. Roberts is Minnesota's Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Chemistry and holds a graduate faculty appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He joined the University of Minnesota in 1990 and has served as chair of the Department of Chemistry since 2005. Roberts was a member of the Center for Science, Technology and Public Policy at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. He was awarded the Special Creativity Award from the National Science Foundation in 2003 and was awarded a Sloan Fellowship in 1996. He was selected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008. Roberts specializes in the fields of physical and materials chemistry. His research interests focus on aerosol surface chemistry.

Arun Ghosh named Distinguished Professor

The Purdue University Board of Trustees approved the appointments of Professor Arun Ghosh as distinguished professor of chemistry and medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology.

Ghosh, who has been at Purdue since 2005, is noted for his accomplishments in the areas of drug design, chemical synthesis of natural products, and development of new reactions and structure-based design of enzyme inhibitors. He advanced the theory of "backbone binding" to combat drug resistance. This conceptual work culminated in the development of Darunavir, the first FDA approved treatment for drug-resistant HIV/AIDS in 2006.

His work on memapsin 2 inhibitors resulted in the first clinical candidate for a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's disease in 2007. His research group also is involved in the design of molecular therapeutics for emerging pathogens, such as SARS, and novel targets for cancer treatment.

Hilkka Kenttämaa presented 2009 Provost’s Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor

The Purdue Graduate School has awarded Hilkka Kenttämaa, a professor of analytical and organic chemistry, with the 2009 Provost’s Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor. The award recognizes contributions to graduate education at Purdue University including: innovative teaching, significant administration of programs, and well-structured relationships with students that lead to successful completion of degrees.

Dr. Kenttämaa has served as major professor for more than 60 graduate students. In her research group, students analyze chemical structures and explore reactivities of unusual molecules by using sophisticated instrumentation. But Dr. Kenttämaa’s students learn more than chemical science in her laboratory. “Besides doing research, she teaches us how to present our research by improving communications skills both orally and written. She provides us opportunities to practice leadership skills,” said doctoral student Zhicheng Jin. Graduate student Steven Habicht is impressed with Professor Kenttämaa’s personalized teaching skills. He says, “She is masterful in creating an environment where every student is allowed to learn in the manner that suites them best, both in the lab and classroom.”

Analytical Chemistry Programs Ranked Among the Best

Best Graduate Schools 2009"We're quite pleased that our stellar program in analytical chemistry is again ranked No. 2," said Jeffrey S. Vitter, former Dean of the College of Science. "We also made very positive gains in computer science, rising two points, and we expect even more gains when our new Lawson Computer Science Building, with its state-of-the-art facilities, opens this year. Overall, six programs in science earned national rankings, which confirms Purdue a true leader in the direction of science programs."

Purdue professor to lead American Chemical Society in 2010

Joe FranciscoJoseph S. Francisco, William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry, has been elected president of the American Chemical Society for 2010.

Established in 1876, the American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific professional association with more than 160,000 members in chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields.

Dr. Francisco’s message to ACS members during his candidacy emphasized the importance of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in the chemical sciences and the need to prepare students to thrive in a global economy.

Francisco will succeed 2009 ACS president elect Dr. Thomas H. Lane, a Dow Corning director and 1974 Purdue chemistry undergraduate.
