The Images

This site provides images that accompany your crystal structure laboratory.

Your textbook shows images of unit cells, images that represent the arrangement of atoms or ions in a crystal. An image of the unit cell of CsCl is shown to the left.

The image shown is a spacefilling model of the unit cell; the ions are shown full size with respect to the unit cell. It may be easier to see the arrangement of all atoms or ions in a unit cell if it is drawn as a "ball and stick" image with small spheres indicating the locations of atoms and sticks showing unit cell edges or the relative positions of the cell's contents. Click on the button labeled "Show ball and stick model" to see the corresponding ball and stick figure.

You can return to the space filling figure by clicking the button labeled "Show spacefilling model" or you can reload the image in its original orientation with the button labeled "Reset".

It may be helpful to move the model in order to see its geometry more clearly. You can use the button labeled "Spin on". Alternatively, you can place the cursor on the model, hold the left mouse button, and drag.
