Teaching Appointments

Almost all entering graduate students will have a teaching appointment as a Graduate Instructor in the Chemistry Department.  These appointments are 1/2 time appointment that will require about 20 hours of work per week.

Most teaching assistant will teach two sections in one of our undergraduate courses.  Each section includes a discussion section for one hour and a three hour laboratory.  So the total contact load for a 1/2 time TA is 8 contact hours.  TA's will typically have 1-2 office hours and a weekly staff meeting. The remainder of time is spent on grading and individual TA preparation.

Teaching appointments provide a great learning experience for graduate students.  Training new students in science is a rewarding experience and helps you understand basic concepts in a different way.  We provide a training program to all new TA's.  The training program is designed to introduce new staff to teaching methods as well as teaching practices used in our department.
