American Chemical Society Awards • 2010 Boston
Purdue is well represented at the August 2010 American Chemical Society meeting in Boston, Mass. The Department of Chemistry is hosting a luncheon for its alumni on Monday, August 23rd, and several ACS members with Purdue connections will be honored. Professor Timothy Zwier, M. G. Mellon Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, has been named a 2010 ACS Fellow along with Purdue alums, Joe D. Allison of ConocoPhillips Co. and Martin L. Gorbaty, retired ExxonMobil Research & Engineering Co. executive. Dr. Donald J. Abraham will be inducted into the American Chemical Society Division of Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame. Abraham is the Alfred and Francis Burger Emeritus Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, and Emeritus Director of the Institute for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He received his Purdue Ph.D. in 1963 studying with Professor Bill Truce. Professor Abraham just finished co-editing a major reference work Medicinal Chemistry: Burger’s Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery, (Wiley Publishers), and the sickle cell drug, 5-HMF, discovered at VCU has been announced to enter clinical trials by AesRX and NIH. Dr. Abraham and his wife Nancy were married at St. Thomas Aquinas on the campus 48 years ago. His oldest son attended Purdue and received a B.S. in Chemistry.
