Professor Emeritus Mary Nakhleh honored for her achievements
The American Chemical Society announced that Professor Emeritus Mary Nakhleh will receive a prestigious award in 2013. Just retired in May, Nakhleh will be accepting the Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching & Learning of Chemistry, as sponsored by Pearson Education at the 2013 American Chemical Society spring meeting to be held April 7 to 11 in New Orleans. "It really is wonderful because it's my peers recognizing the work I've done," Nakhleh said. "I'm getting congratulatory messages from all around the country." At Purdue, Nakhleh's focus was so much on chemistry education that she was jointly appointed to the College of Science and the College of Education. But no matter what dean she was reporting to, her research explored how students learn chemistry concepts and how teachers could better teach the principles of chemistry. Nakhleh's concentration was on chemistry education of college students but she has explored chemistry education at all levels, from kindergarten through graduate school. With the award comes money. It is not known yet how much she will receive but Nakhleh said she will put the money toward more research and the writing of a book. "I'm so proud of the Chemistry department. There is lots to be proud of at Purdue," Nakhleh said.
