Purdue trustees approve new vice provost, honor 4 professors

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Thursday, June 30) named a new vice provost for academic affairs and approved the appointments of three designated professorships and a designated department head position.

The board also approved two new degree programs, a department name change, a posthumous degree and Matt Painter's previously announced appointment as men's head basketball coach. A new vice chancellor at Purdue Calumet also was confirmed.

Associate Provost Christine M. Ladisch, who has been a Purdue faculty member since 1979, was named vice provost for academic affairs, effective Friday (July 1).

"Dr. Ladisch has been a tremendous asset in helping us evaluate our academic programs, which has prepared her well to now manage them," said Provost Sally Mason. "Her previous work for us with state officials in higher education is the perfect background for her new role."

Ladisch succeeds Margaret M. Rowe, who had been in the post since 2001 and will return to the Department of English faculty in January after a fall semester sabbatical. Ladisch will retain her academic appointment as professor in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing.

In addition to planning, managing and reviewing all Purdue academic programs, the Office of the Provost administers a variety of initiatives aimed at continual improvement of Purdue's academics.

Ladisch was named associate provost in 2001. In that capacity, she was the academic liaison to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, led various faculty development programs, and assisted with developing and revising academic policies.

She earned master's and doctoral degrees from Purdue in textile science in 1975 and 1978, respectively, and a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State University in 1973. From 1993-99, Ladisch served as associate dean in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences and was head of the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing from 1999-2001.

As a professor in consumer sciences and retailing, Ladisch taught courses in textile science. Her research interests include biotechnology applications for textile products, and her work had been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. departments of Energy and Agriculture.

Ladisch has received several departmental, college and university awards for teaching excellence, including the Mary L. Matthews Teaching Award in 1981 and 1992 and the Amoco Foundation Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1984. She is a charter member of the Purdue Teaching Academy and in 1999 was inducted into Purdue's Book of Great Teachers, which honors outstanding teaching faculty. Ladisch received the 2003 Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue's College of Consumer and Family Sciences.
