First RAVE winner has formula for working together with harmony, success

InsidePurdue“It’s incredible. They’re all very generous. It’s like a family.”

Those words from Donna Wilkinson about her fellow staff in the Department of Chemistry, sum up why the department is the first to win WorkLife Programs’ RAVE award. RAVE stands for Recognizing All Valuable Employees.

All of the chemistry department’s 90 administrative and professional, clerical, and service staff will enjoy a pizza party later this month, sponsored by WorkLife.

Wilkinson, an administrative assistant, submitted an e-mail entry in response to a call-out by WorkLife Programs for areas worth RAVE-ing about. She says that staff in the chemistry department go far beyond what’s expected to help each other, much like family members do.

“We had one woman who lost her brother suddenly,” Wilkinson recalls. “And people were calling us and asking us how they could contribute so that she could travel home.”

It’s this departmental culture of caring that Wilkinson says makes people want to stay with the department.
“The average length of service for staff in the department right now is 15 years. People don’t leave chemistry because it’s such a great place to work.”
