Joseph S. Francisco, William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry, has been elected president of the American Chemical Society for 2010.
Established in 1876, the American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific professional association with more than 160,000 members in chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields.
Dr. Francisco’s message to ACS members during his candidacy emphasized the importance of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in the chemical sciences and the need to prepare students to thrive in a global economy.
Francisco will succeed 2009 ACS president elect Dr. Thomas H. Lane, a Dow Corning director and 1974 Purdue chemistry undergraduate.
Francisco received a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and joined Purdue in 1995. He has been a member of ACS since 1991 serving on several of its boards and committees.
