B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry at Marshall University and
completed his doctoral work in analytical chemistry at the University
of Illinois. He joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry
at Purdue University in 1961 and advanced through the ranks
to Professor of Chemistry in 1969. His research and teaching
specialties are in the areas of automation, computer applications
in chemistry, kinetic measurements and computations, new spectroscopic
detection systems, and problems related to clinical and bioanalytical
chemistry. He was among the early supporters of the applications
of fast kinetic methods in clinical chemistry. More recently
he has exploited the capabilities of array detectors and other
imaging sensors for analytical and clinical problems which can
profit from rapidly scanned spectra.
Harry
has directed the research of over seventy masters and doctoral
students. He and his students have published over 160 scientific
publications and is co-author with Prof George Bodner of a
textbook on general chemistry.
Harry
has won several awards and recognitions related to his research.
Some of these include the ACS Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry,
the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical
Instrumentation, the AACC award for Outstanding Contributions
to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area, and Samuel Natelson
Award.
Harry
has also received several recognitions for his teaching. These
recognitions include a Best Freshman Teacher at Purdue award
in 1992, The Arthur E. Kelly award for Outstanding Teaching
in the Purdue University Department of Chemistry (1993 and
2001) and The Best Teacher Award, School of Science, 2001.
He was named to the Purdue Teaching Academy in 2001.
Harry
has served as the chairman of the Analytical Division of the
ACS and as the Head of the Department of Chemistry at Purdue.
He has served on the editorial boards of several journals
including ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY and CLINICAL CHEMISTRY and
was the American Editor of ANALYTICA CHIMICA ACTA for several
years.
