Using E-mail to Discuss Chemistry

Using
E-Mail to Discuss Chemistry
Since e-mail
does not handle superscripts, subscripts, greek letters, types symbols,
and other characters that we can show on a web page, use the
following format instead:
-
Put subscripts on the line. F2 becomes
F2
-
Use a caret, ^, to indicate a superscript. S2-
becomes S^2-
-
Use -> to replace an arrow in a reaction: 2 H2 + O2 -> 2 H2O
(The space between a coefficient and a formula helps avoid confusion between
coefficient and subscript.)
-
Use = to replace a double arrow in an equilibrium:
HF = H^+ + F^-
-
Spell out the names of greek letters in brackets:
S
becomes [delta]S
-
X indicates nultiplication: 2 X 2 = 4
-
/ indicates division: 6/3 = 2
-
To handle symbols
for nuclides such as 2412Mg type
the atomic number before the symbol and the mass number after it, using
hyphens between the number and the symbol; i.e., 12-Mg-24.
This is our modified version of the convention that refers to 2412Mg
as magnesium-24.
