Ammonia Borane Synthesis:  We have developed chemical processes for the economical synthesis of >98% chemically pure AB.  The impurity in AB is detrimental for the long-term storage of AB, and resulted in impurities along with the generated hydrogen, which affected the performance of the fuel cell. New and improved synthesis techniques have been developed that produce AB in 95% yields and >98% purity from sodium borohydride and ammonium salts.

Thermal Energy Storage:  We are investigating novel fluoroalkylborates as Organic Phase Change Materials.  The objective of this project is to develop integrated Thermal Energy Storage technologies with goals of 1000 kJ/kg at 20 to 70 °C and 180 MJ/m3 that can store peak or transient heat loads representative of future high-power electronics or weapon systems.  This represents three times the current state-of-the-art.
