A concept map is a two-dimensional node-link diagram that depicts the structure of knowledge as viewed by a individual. The map is composed of labeled concepts, each enclosed in a box or oval; linked by labeled lines
that indicate the relationship of the concepts. By reading the map one can:
- gain insight into the way people view a topic
- examine the understandings people hold
- assess the structural complexity of the relationships depicted.
Concept maps can be used for organizing ideas, as graphic organizers, for student assessment, and as a way to encourage students to reflect on their own knowledge and to work together and share their understandings
in collaborative group settings. We use our concept map to indicate the various components of Purdue's Chemical Eudcation program and their relatinship.
