DOT = Department of Transportation also called USDOT

WHAT IS IT?  A Federal agency which makes regulations about transportation.  DOT regulations are of interest to chemists because they include many rules pertaining to transportation of hazardous materials.  The DOT was established in 1966 by an act of Congress.   DOT regulations are found in the CFR, title 49, and

Secretary of Transportation is a Federal cabinet position, on par with Secretary of Labor, Defense, Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, HUD....  Within the DOT are:  Federal Aviation Adminitration, Coast Guard, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, and about six more agencies.
