REM = Purdue Radiological and Environmental Management

WHAT IS IT?  A NON-academic department in Physical Facilities, 40+ people who work to take care of

  • Occupational Health and Safety: chemical, biological, radiation, construction, HazMat transportation, fire, building, machine, vehicle ... health and safety
  • Waste disposal: chemical, biological, asbestos, radioisotope (not regular trash)

All large universities have a section such as this.  In very small institutions it is common for one or two people to perform all the functions.
