General policies and promises
With rare exception, by Wednesday 8 pm the presentation/slides to be used at the next day's 10:30 am class will be finished and the link to them in the calendar above will be accurate. Once or twice a semester this might be changed, and the presentation material withheld intentionally so as to require students to look up study guide questions some other way.
By 8 pm Monday the quiz study links will be in place if there are going to be any (for the next meeting). If no study links are there by 8 pm Monday, there will be none. That would suggest that the quiz might cover past material or some sort of opinion/survey or "how much do you know without studying" sort of questions.
Behavior problems are extremely rare. Rudeness or other inappropriate behavior toward the other class members or any instructor, lecturer or assistant will not be tolerated. It will be reported to the Graduate School, your Department's graduate advisory staff, and your research advisor if you have one.
No "excused" absences from CHM 605. Attend class or attend a make-up meeting. All assignments must be completed as well, everything made right before grades are assigned or a grade of "U" will be given and a notice will be sent to department advisors. (CHM 605 grades are either S = satisfactory or U = unsatisfactory, and this will appear on your permanent Purdue GRADES TRANSCRIPT, for the course named "Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory.") It is your responsibility to check your attendance and assignment record regularly to make sure that everything is in order, and it is your responsibility to make up absences promptly.
To make up an absence read and follow these instructions RIGHT AWAY.
If at any time it appears that you are falling behind, i.e., uncompleted assignments or unresolved absences, it will be necessary to communicate this information with your Department's graduate program advisor, WHEN AND IF THE CHM 605 INSTRUCTORS HAVE THE TIME. (They will try to have/make the time to warn and nag you, but it cannot be promised.)
Students will pass or fail CHM 605 based on attendance, completion of all assignments, completion of and/or scores received on tests and quizzes, and on the instructor's assessment of the student's attitude, abilities, and knowledge.
If you are late and miss the quiz, send a message to swihart@purdue.edu which includes the time you arrived in class that day and what date it was.
I will reply telling you if you need to make up the class by scheduling a make-up meeting with me.
In the event of excessive absenteeism (two of the first five classes, for example), the student may be asked to provide acknowledgement from a department advisor indicating that the department has been made aware of the student's excessive absenteeism. (All absences are to be made as promptly as possible up as well.)
Three absences will in general result in a failing grade, and the recommendation that the student re-attempt the course another year. In very rare cases of serious illness or tragedy it might be possible for the student to receive and "I" (incomplete), but an incomplete can only be given under certain circumstances fitting requirements established by the University.
