By 8 pm Monday the quiz study links will be in place if there are going to be any (for the next meeting). If no study links are there by 8 pm Monday, there will be none. That would suggest that the quiz might cover past material or some sort of opinion/survey or "how much do you know without studying" sort of questions. |

Behavior problems are extremely rare. Rudeness or other inappropriate behavior toward the other class members or any instructor, lecturer or assistant will not be tolerated. It will be reported to the Graduate School, your Department's graduate advisory staff, and your research advisor if you have one. |

Policies: |
There are no "excused" absences from CHM 605. You must attend or make up every class in order to pass. All assignments must be completed as well, everything made right before grades are assigned or a grade of "U" will be given and a notice will be sent to department advisors. (CHM 605 grades are either S = satisfactory or U = unsatisfactory, and this will appear on your permanent Purdue GRADES TRANSCRIPT, for the course named "Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory.") It is your responsibility to check your attendance and assignment record regularly to make sure that everything is in order, and it is your responsibility to make up absences promptly. In general if a person is more than 5 min late to class (but not more than about 15 min late) he or she will not have time to take the quiz but can make it up at his/her convenience later (contact Dr. Swihart). If a person misses more than 1/3 of the class time (that's about 15-18 min) they will have to complete the make-up procedure for that week. The make-up procedure includes a test for which no notes or books may be used. |
If at any time it appears that you are getting into trouble with uncompleted assignments or with absences, it will be necessary to communicate this information with your Department's graduate program advisor, WHEN AND IF THE CHM 605 INSTRUCTORS HAVE THE TIME. (They will try to have/make the time to warn and nag you, but it cannot be promised.) |
Students will pass or fail CHM 605 based on attendance, completion of all assignments, completion of and scores received on tests and quizzes ("assessments"), and on the instructor's assessment of the student's attitude, abilities, and knowledge. |
Absences, extremely late arrival to class, and in most cases late homework assignments, will be made up by a testing procedure. Whether the absence or tardiness is planned (conference, trip) or not planned (illness, transportation problem, sick child...) notify Dr. Swihart in writing as soon as possible, which
The make-up procedure is considerably more demanding than attending class; this is intentional, designed to discourage absenteeism.
In the event of excessive absenteeism (two of the first five classes, for example), the student may be asked to provide acknowledgement from a department advisor indicating that the department has been made aware of the student's excessive absenteeism. (All absences are to be made as promptly as possible up as well.) Three absences will result in a failing grade, and the recommendation that the student re-attempt the course another year. In very rare cases of serious illness or tragedy it might be possible for the student to receive and "I" (incomplete), but an incomplete can only be given under certain circumstances fitting requirements established by the University. |
