Hearing protection is something your employer must provide (and insist you wear) if excessive noise exposure is likely.  Most chemical work is unlikely to make a lot of noise, but there is indeed often noise in labs...

... and if there is noise that bothers you, or you're just curious, ask about it.  It can be tested.  Ears do not recover from the damage done to them by excessive noise.
