Odor problems

FOR MAJOR ODOR PROBLEMS CALL 911, tell them what is going on, and get out.  You are not to remain in an area you believe to be hazardous to your health.  Period.  Doesn't matter how important your work is, it is never more important than your health.

For problems which are not believed to be dangerous to your health, call the general Chem Shop phone number 45209 and describe what is going on, and as soon as possible log the event.  Note time, date, location(s), people you talked to, comments, observations, ideas.   Use this form or one like it.  Check all floor and sink drains.  If the odor is in an area on BRWN 3rd, 4th, 5th, focus some attention at the north and south walls (window areas); there are or were areas where cup-sink drains were removed and drains paneled over without adequate capping.   Check the rooms north and south and east and west and above and below you.  Check your refrigerator and coffee maker and the mechanical chase where your air handler is located, if it is located in a chase.  (Seriously, this is where many odors are traced to.)

The Department of Chemistry Safety Committee Page is included below.  It is acceptable to inquire of and ask for help tracking down the source of an odor by contacting Safety Committee people near you.  They may or may not have time to drop what they're doing to help.  There are no staff members to simply "handle it" for you.  Odors generally get away very quickly, and solving them is a problem that requires fast action (making observations and taking notes) by whoever is right there where the problem is.  This is probably going to be you.

Safety in the Department of Chemistry includes not only chemical safety concerns, but all aspects of safety and health for staff, students, and visiting researchers.  These include fire protection, machine safety,  emergency preparedness, and compliance with regulations about occupational safety, hazardous materials management, and environmental protection.

All groups (research groups and "other" groups, see roster at left) must have a safety committee contact, and someone must either attend meetings or work outside of meetings to make sure communications in both directions are clear and efficient.  All individuals in the Dept must know who their Safety Committee rep is.

The "faculty @chem, the "directors@ chem" and the Safety committee roster addresses will all receive safety committee meeting notices.
Supervisors are to

  • send updated information via the SAFETY COMMITTEE INTO UPDATE form whenever appropriate.
  • forward the meeting notice to their safety committee representative or verbally ascertain that it was received.  (This small bit of redundancy will be very helpful.)
  • decide whether or not to require that someone from their group (committee rep or a substitute) attend the meeting.
  • ensure that all individuals working on projects supported by their funds, however independently or separate from the main group, are adequately included in awareness of safety and safety committee activities.
  • maintain awareness of current Department safety projects and requirements.

(Supervisors may accomplish most of these things via delegating to a research or clerical staff member, but not the last bullet point above.)

2011-2012 Meeting Schedule, notes from meetings
  •

Division representatives are faculty members appointed to the Safety Committee by the Head of the Department of Chemistry.

*Faculty members who have not appointed a safety committee representative are invited to do so as they wish and as they have available staff. Please use the COMMITTEE UPDATE form.

Professor Ivanisevic is not currently (Spring 2011) supervising CHM staff nor using CHM space.
