Safety in the Department of Chemistry
includes not only chemical safety concerns, but all aspects of
safety and health for staff, students, and visiting
researchers. These include fire protection, machine
safety, emergency preparedness, and compliance with
regulations about occupational safety, hazardous materials
management, and environmental protection.
All groups (research groups and "other" groups, see
roster at left) must have a safety committee contact, and
someone must either attend meetings or work outside of meetings
to make sure communications in both directions are clear and
efficient. All individuals in the Dept must know who their
Safety Committee rep is.
The "faculty @chem,
the "directors@ chem" and the Safety committee roster
addresses will all receive safety committee meeting notices.
Supervisors are to
- send updated information via
the SAFETY COMMITTEE INTO UPDATE form whenever
appropriate.
- forward the meeting notice
to their safety committee representative or verbally
ascertain that it was received. (This small bit of
redundancy will be very helpful.)
- decide whether or not to
require that someone from their group (committee rep or a
substitute) attend the meeting.
- ensure that all
individuals working on projects supported by their funds,
however independently or separate from the main group, are
adequately included in awareness of safety and safety
committee activities.
- maintain awareness of
current Department safety projects and requirements.
(Supervisors may accomplish
most of these things via delegating to a research or clerical
staff member, but not the last bullet point above.) |
