Required Training 3 of 3

The 3rd and 4th of the four "required training" points:
  • Protective Measures and Emergency Procedures you can use to protect yourself from the the chemical hazards in your workplace.

Hazard Assessment and Personal Protective Equipment training are part of this (and are required), but protection is much more than PPE.  All staff must be trained procedures, rules, housekeeping, equipment use, and chemical storage expectations necessary to protect human health from workplace chemical hazards.  You may sometimes be able to learn all the information you need or a particular chemical from reading the MSDS.  If this is not sufficient or practical, it is the responsibility of your supervisor and your department to ensure that you receive the training required.

  • Details of the Chemical Hygiene Plan

In other words, which details of the CHP apply to your work and work area.  In most areas of lab chemical use, all or nearly all of the details of the CHP apply.

These two points are very specific to your research area (as are some previous information and training points) and cannot be covered adequately here or in any other one-size-fits-all training program.  The training must be given to you by someone who knows exactly what is needed, or must be undertaken independently by you.  It must include specific information and training relevant to your group's work.
