Hazards Associated with Cryogens - Thermal Tissue Damage

"Burns" are what they're called even when caused by extreme cold.
  • Rarely occurs due to gas film, but don't handle too long.
  • No film protection with CO2, ammonia.

Cold metal parts can freeze tissue:

  • No protective gas film.
  • Skin moisture freezes (like tongue on frozen metal).

Remedy: Wear protective gear/clothing such as eye and face
protection (required), loose-fitting gloves, and cuffless trousers over boots (no sneakers).

See Volume II, Part 18: Cryogenics for guidelines on Personal Protective Equipment in the reference section.
