Instruments

The Kenttämaa group uses nine different mass spectrometers to conduct various types of analytical and physical organic mass spectrometry research. Most of the instruments have been optimized for use in a specific area of our research. Each instrument also has a graduate student supervisor who is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.

NEL
NEL is a 3-Tesla Finnigan FTMS 2001 dual-cell FT-ICR mass spectrometer that uses EI/CI for ion generation. This instrument is equipped with two thermal solids probes and multiple leak valve inlets. It is primarily used to study the kinetics of the reactions of gas-phase bi- and polyradicals.

TIC
TIC is a 3-Tesla Nicolet FTMS 2000 dual-cell FT-ICR mass spectrometer that uses EI/CI for ion generation. This instrument is equipped with a high-power, “fiberless” LIAD setup. It is primarily used for petroleum analysis via chemical ionization and for the study of radical-induced degradation of biomolecules.

LIL
LIL is a 7-Tesla Finnigan TQ-80 dual-cell FT-ICR mass spectrometer that uses EI/CI for ion generation. This instrument is equipped with an automated, “fiberless” LIAD probe.It is primarily used for studying complex petroleum fractions.

HAL
HAL is a 3-Tesla Extrel FTMS 2001 dual-cell FT-ICR mass spectrometer that uses EI/CI for ion generation. This instrument is primarily used to develop novel ion-molecule reactions for the identification of various functional groups.

STE
STE is a Finnigan LTQ linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation. This instrument has a home-built reagent mixing manifold for studying ion-molecule reactions.It is coupled with a Finnigan Surveyor HPLC system, which allows LC/MSn experiments.

EVE
EVE is a Finnigan LTQ linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation.This instrument has been modified to accept the LIAD probe.

GIB
GIB is a home-built flowing-afterglow guided ion beam triple quadrupole mass spectrometer that uses EI/CI for ion generation.It is used to determine various thermochemical values, such as bond dissociation energies.

ZOE
ZOE is a Finnigan TSQ 7000 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation.It has been modified to allow the introduction of neutral molecules into q2 for ion-molecule reactions.It is coupled with a TSP HPLC system, which allows LC/MS and LC/MS/MS experiments.

ZED
ZED is a Finnigan TSQ 7000 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation.This instrument is currently being modified to accept the LIAD probe.
