Current Research:

The action of some powerful antitumor and antibiotic drugs is believed to be based on abstraction of hydrogen atoms from DNA strands by aromatic σ-biradicals. However, the mechanisms for the interactions between the biradicals and DNA at molecular level and control of the chemical properties of the radical intermediate itself are not well understood, because of the highly reactive nature of the radicals and the complexity of the biological environment. Now I am using laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) method to introduce neutral DNA components into FT-ICR and allow them to react with the charged phenyl radicals with different polarities generated in the FT-ICR, therefore the interactions of the phenyl radicals with DNA components are studied at molecular level and under a much cleaner condition. A better understanding the reactivity of phenyl radicals towards DNA components can help to design more efficient and less toxic drugs.
