The Microanalysis Laboratory provides the following services in support of basic research within the department as well as the campus:

  • Elemental Microanalysis – major elements
  • Custom Synthesis – a wide range of compounds

While elemental analysis is this lab’s main function, custom synthesis is provided based on time and facilities available.

Equipment Available:

  • A Perkin-Elmer 2400 Series II CHNS/O Analyzer, capable of analyzing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and/or oxygen.
  • A Perkin-Elmer 240C Elemental Analyzer, used for the determination of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen.
  • A Sargent Micro Combustion Apparatus for carbon and hydrogen determinations.
  • A Corning 250 Ion Analyzer and an Orion 920A pH/ISE Meter for pH measurements, ion-selective measurements as well as potentiometric titrations.
  • Two Mettler mechanic micro balances, measuring weights of samples down to micro grams.
  • Two Perkin-Elmer electronic sub-micro balances, measuring weights of samples down to tenths of a micro gram.
  • Glassware for Dumas nitrogen determination.
  • Glassware for Kjeldahl nitrogen determination.
  • choniger combustion flasks, Kjeldahl flasks, Parr bombs and other equipments for sample digestions.
  • Glassware for all basic gravimetric and volumetric analyses.
  • Glassware for a wide range of custom organic, bio-organic and inorganic syntheses.
