Evan Buchanan, graduate student, 2007. Evan Buchanan grew up in Ada, Michagan. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics at Denison University. He has taken up residence in the basement of the Brown Laboratory of Chemistry.

Zachary Davis, graduate student, 2008. Zach comes from Greenville, South Carolina, where it is much warmer. While working on his B.S. in Chemistry at Erskine College, he was actively involved with the Erskine chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, being president for his last two years. He was also Technical Director for the Erskine Theatre. He had the opportunity to participate in summer REU programs at Furman University with Prof. Moses Lee and the Advanced Materials Research Institute at the University of New Orleans with Prof. Leszek Malkinski. He spent two summers as a teaching assistant for Chrystal Bruce at the Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences, a program that provides college credit in the sciences to rising high school juniors and seniors. While at the University of Tennessee for the Governor's School, he also performed research with Prof. Ziling (Ben) Xue. Back to Main Group Page

James Redwine, graduate student, 2008. James graduated from the Lyman Briggs School at Michigan State University with a B.S. in chemistry (honors) in 2008. He grew up in Coleman, MI, a small town near Midland. He worked for the Dow Chemical Company during his senior year enrolled at H.H. Dow High School in Midland. Main hobbies include hunting, fishing, racing his two racecars, and the Irish sport of Hurling. He is a joint member of the McLuckey and Zwier groups and is undertaking the construction of a radical new ion spectrometer. Back to Main Group Page

Jacob Dean, graduate student, 2009. Jacob received his B.S. from Texas A&M University in 2009. He studied chemistry and found his primary interests were in physical chemistry, more specifically applications in optical spectroscopy. He was a former researcher in Dr. Simon North's group (TAMU), but has been a proud member of the Zwier group since entering graduate school. Back to Main Group Page

Deepali Mehta, graduate student, 2009. Deepali was born in Ahmedabad, India and moved to America with her family when she was five years old. She grew up in southern California and completed her B.S. in chemistry (Honors Program) at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in the spring of 2009. During her time at CSUF, Deepali conducted undergraduate research studying the kinetics of atmospheric reactions in the laboratory of Dr. Zhuangjie Li. Nathan Kidwell, graduate student, 2009. Nathan was born in Fort Ord, CA, but grew up in Danville, IL where he graduated from Danville High School in 2005. He studied Chemistry and Physics (Summa Cum Laude, Honors Scholar) at Illinois State University under Dr. John Baur (SECM for imaging dynamic substrates), Dr. Jean Standard (theoretical modeling of alkanethiolates binding to metal clusters), and Drs. Qichang Su and Rainer Grobe (interaction of modulated laser radiation with heterogeneous dielectric media). Nathan is happily married to his beautiful wife, and enjoys playing/watching sports, chess and reading. Back to Main Group Page

Di Zhang, graduate student, 2010. Di grew up in Beijing, the capital of China, but returned to Hefei, the place where he was born to receive his B.S. in chemical physics from the University of Science and Technology of China. At his undergraduate stage, he had research experiences in nonlinear optics at Prof. Hongfei Wang group and Synchrotron radiation based threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy at Prof. Shilin Liu group at National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale. He enjoys his scientific research in physical chemistry very much. Apart from research, Di is an expert in collecting aeroplane models. Back to Main Group Page

Joseph Korn, graduate student, 2010. Originally hailing from Spokane, WA, Joe attended Western Washington University receiving his B.S. in Chemistry with the class of 2009. After a year of soul/job-searching, waiting tables, and bartending he came to Purdue and joined the Zwier group where he could combine his interests in laser spectroscopy and space. Patrick Walsh, graduate student, 2011. Patrick graduated in 2011 from the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry (cum laude, program honors) and a minor in German. While at Pitt, Patrick did research in the lab of Dr. David W. Pratt using rotationally resolved high resolution spectroscopy to study the shapes and interactions of molecules. Patrick is originally from an area just outside Philly. He enjoys playing rugby, and loves the Boston Redsox. Patrick also enjoys the winter. Back to Main Group Page

Nicole Burke, graduate student, 2011. Nicole grew up in Michigan, moving to North Carolina at the age of 13. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (with distinction) with a B.S. in Chemistry in the spring of 2011. While at UNC, Nicole conducted undergraduate research studying the separation of proteins using CE-ESI-MS on glass microfluidic devices in the lab of Dr. Mike Ramsey. She received the Carrie Largent Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship from UNC to continue her research. Outside the lab Nicole's interests include baking and cooking, college baseball, and spending time with Guinness her boxer puppy. Back to Main Group Page
