Harrison Teacher picked for Science Teacher Fellowship

Chemistry alumna Samantha Carney, a chemistry teacher at Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana, is one of four Indiana teachers who received a 2013-14 New Science Teacher Academy fellowship from the National Science Teachers Association.

The fellowship provides resources and advice for science teachers in their second to fifth year of teaching. Two hundred teachers were selected from more than 1,000 who applied, according to NSTA. “It’s a way to share, find new ways of doing things,” Carney said. “It’s a professional development opportunity.”

The fellowship gives her a place to talk with other young teachers about problems and ideas. Carney also was paired with an experienced science teacher in North Carolina, who serves as a mentor.

She said she’ll go to the NSTA national conference in April. Until then, she attends two-hour Web seminars about once a month.

She takes pages of notes during each seminar. The advice covers techniques she can apply right away. She said teaching full time is different than being a Purdue University student, so it’s nice to talk with other teachers who are figuring out the same things.

Carney also shares the ideas and information she learns with fellow Harrison science teachers.
