Elevation of the
Boiling Point of a Solvent

We need two pieces of information to calculate the elevation of the boiling point of the solvent in a solution containing a nonvolatile nonelectrolyte:

• The molal concentration, m, of the solute in the solution (Sometimes it may be necessary to calculate this concentration from other information.)
• The boiling point elevation constant, K_b, for the solvent.

We use the following equation to calculate a boiling point elevation:

Boiling Point of a Solution

The boiling point of the solvent in a solution containing a nonvolatile nonelectrolyte, T_solution, may be found from the following information:

• The boiling point of the pure solvent, T_{pure solvent}.
• The boiling point elevation of the solution, T.

Note: The boiling point of a solution containing a nonvolatile solute will always be higher than the boiling point of the pure solvent.
