Itaru Hamachi

Dr Itaru Hamachi received his PhD in 1988 from Kyoto University under the tutelege of the late Professor Iwao Tabushi, and subsequently joined Kyuushu University as an assistant professor under Prof. Toyoki Kunitake upon graduation. In 1992, He was promoted to associate professor in Kyuushu University in Shinkai laboratory group. In 2001, Dr Hamachi was promoted to full professor of the Institute of Fundamental Organic Chemistry in Kyuushu University in 2001, and moved back to the department of synthetic chemistry in Kyoto University in 2005. Since his tenure as a full professor in 2001, Dr Hamachi has received various accolades and awards, including the Peking U-Eli Lilly lectureship award, UC Berkeley BASF lectureship award and The Chemical Society of Japan Award. In the past years, he has been a key investigator under various programs funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agnecy, such as PRESTO and CREST research programs, and is currently a research direction under the ERATO program. His current research interests include live-cell organic chemistry, chemical biology, bioorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, and supramolecular biomaterials.
