Relating the Microscopic and Macroscopic Worlds of Chemistry I am interested in the connections students make between the microscopic and macroscopic worlds of Chemistry.  In particular, I would like to explore students’ conceptions of how the molecular-level bonding of chemical compounds (intermolecular and intramolecular bonding) affects the bulk physical properties of chemical compounds (e.g. density and viscosity).  I am most interested in freshman Chemistry students because I feel that a solid foundation is crucial to future success in Chemistry.     Visualization of the Chemical World The ability to visualize chemical structures is integral to a successful navigation between the microscopic and macroscopic worlds of Chemistry.  As a result, I also have an interest in visualization techniques and strategies that are effective in aiding students in their study of Chemistry.
