Facilities
Purdue University is internationally recognized for its
excellence in mass spectrometry. The
chemistry department itself prides itself not only on the quantity of faculty
with mass spec interests, but also the high quality. As such, Purdue is uniquely capable of
providing an REU experience that illustrates the diversity of possible mass spectrometric
capabilities that encompasses almost all fields of chemistry.
Students in the REU program will be working directly in the
laboratories of the individual faculty, using their dedicated mass spec
instruments. They will not be using instrumentation
shared by the rest of the department.
While many of the instruments that will be used are commercially
available, many projects will involve the use of custom built instruments
designed specifically for the experiments that will be done.
