Professor Chi Zhang’s research group develops new optical imaging and opto-control technologies for biomedical applications. We use lasers to excite molecules and detect their absorption, scattering, and emission features for the characterization and quantification of these molecules in biological samples. We also develop laser-based opto-control technologies to precisely control chemical reactions in live cells at only desired locations. Moreover, we use optical imaging, spectroscopy, and opto-control technologies to understand metabolic changes of cells in stress conditions.
REU students participating in research in the Zhang research group will have the opportunity to involve in optical instrumentation development and biological imaging applications. The REU students will work closely with our graduate students and postdoctoral associate in research and have weekly or biweekly individual meetings with Dr. Chi Zhang.
