Shanica Brown is a graduate student currently in her third year at Purdue University. She is from the beautiful island of Jamaica. However, she completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at Rollins College in Orlando, Fl. During her undergraduate career, her focus was in Physical Chemistry where she spearheaded a project studying the effects of polyhydroxy compounds, specifically carbohydrates and sugar alcohols, on the level of hydration. In addition to her studies, she has participated in the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society at Rollins College where she encouraged the interest of promising science majors. Additionally, she was also an executive member of the Black Student Union where she volunteered with underprivileged students.

As a graduate student, she is a part of Dr. Christine Hrycyna’s lab group where she studies the structure and mechanism of a zinc metalloprotein, Ste24. She has also continued her interest in leadership by joining the executive boards of Iota Sigma Pi, an honor society for women in chemistry, as well as, the Graduate Student Advisory Board.
