Using JMol

The molecular structures viewed at this site can use the JMol Java applet to render molecular structures. The applet is provided by this site, but requires the Java applet browser plug-in be installed on the client's system. The plug-in is available with the Java runtime environment (JRE) here. Another technology (JSmol) that uses only javascript but requires a browser that conforms to HTML5 can be used in place of the Java applet. The recent version of popular browsers conform well enough. This is now the default rendering engine except for Chrome. Note however, NMR pages still require the Java plug-in to render NMR spectra. Some browsers enable the pages to fall back to the other technology if it does not support the first. Click on one of the following to specify your preference.

• With the mouse pointer over a , clicking and holding the mouse button on the Macintosh, or clicking the right mouse button under Windows, brings up a property sheet which allows the user to:
  
  • change the display options,
  • change the display color,
  • bring up an About box,
  • turn on and off molecule rotation,
  • turn on and off animation,
  • store the input file locally
  
  
• Clicking and holding down the mouse button (left mouse button under Windows) while over a plug-in allows the user to manually rotate the structure on display.
• Clicking and holding down the mouse button (left mouse button under Windows) and simultaneously depressing the Shift key while over a plug-in allows the user to resize the structure on display.
• Under Windows, clicking and holding down the right mouse button and simultaneously depressing the Control key while over a plug-in allows the user to translate (shift) the structure on display. On the Macintosh clicking and holding down the mouse button while simultaneously depressing the Control and Option keys provides the same capability.
