2025 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Michael P. Eddy

Eddy has a long standing interest in geology that began when he collected fossils in North Carolina as a kid. He subsequently received a A.B. in Geosciences from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Geology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the faculty at Purdue University in 2019, where he has built a state-of-the art laboratory for the production of U-Pb geochronological data. His current research work continues to reflect his interest in geology: an understanding of time is critical to nearly all endeavors within Earth science. However, many Earth processes occur on timescales that are well beyond the human experience. Eddy’s research bridges the gap between what can be observed or modeled in a laboratory and long-lived geologic systems that are largely inaccessible to direct observation. He does this by combining field-based research with high-precision radioisotopic dating techniques to quantify the rates of Earth processes. His principal research interests are leveraging the spatial and temporal distribution of magmatism, sedimentation, and deformation to understand tectonic processes, constraining the rates of magmatic processes, and determining the timing and duration of extinction events in Earth history.
