Our Instruments
STE is a Finnigan LTQ linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation. This instrument has a home-built reagent mixing manifold for studying ion-molecule reactions. It is coupled with a Finnigan Surveyor HPLC system, which allows LC/MSn experiments.
EVE is a Finnigan LTQ linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation. This instrument has been modified to accept the LIAD probe.
OBI is a Thermo Fisher Scientific linear quadrupole ion trap (LQIT) coupled with a high-resolution orbitrap detector, LTQ Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer, that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation. It is coupled with a HPLC.
The pyroprobe is a CDS 5000 series pyrolyzer. It can couple with mass spectrometer or GC/MS.
NEZ is a Thermo Fisher Scientific linear quadrupole ion trap (LQIT) coupled with a high-resolution orbitrap detector, LTQ Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer, that uses ESI/APCI for ion generation.
BEN is a Thermo linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer coupled with a liquid chromatography system. Though it seems to be the most basic instrument in Prof. Kenttämaa's lab, it can do multiple works such as single ion monitor (SIM), collision-activated dissociation (CAD) and LC-MS. It's also the best instrument to do ion-molecule reaction if the neutral reactant is a gas. BEN's UV detector is also coupled with prep-HPLC pump that can separate and collect fractions with very similar polarities.
FIN is a linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer dedicated for the analysis of saturated hydrocarbons. It came to our lab thanks to our Finnish collaborator, Neste. And that’s how it got its name. Coupled with Thermo Ultimate 3000 autosampler, FIN is capable of analyzing a series of saturated hydrocarbon samples fully automatically!
TWIN is a home-built dual linear quadrupole ion trap (LQIT) mass spectrometer that can be operated in both single LQIT and dual LQIT mode. This was made possible via octupole ion optics that transfer the ions from the first ion trap into the second ion trap. When the instrument is operated in the dual LQIT mode, undesirable effects of air (as seen in the first ion trap) are greatly reduced, which allows more precise examination of ion/molecule reactions.
BIL is a Thermo Scientific linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer that can be equipped with either ESI or APCI ion source. A Finnigan Surveyor HPLC system is coupled to BIL, allowing HPLC/MSn experiments for the separation and analysis of complex mixtures. BIL also is equipped with a nine-pulsed valve system for introduction of nine different reagents for ion-molecule reactions with protonated analytes when they elute from the HPLC.
AVI is a LECO Pegasus GCxGC/(EI,CI) TOF state-of-the-art instrument belonging to Prof. Gozdem Kilaz but kept in the Kenttamaa laboratories and used in collaborative projects on the analysis of aviation fuels.
