Research Experience for Undergraduates in
Chemical Biology
The program will NOT be offered in Summer 2007 - Sorry!

Department of Chemistry, lipton@purdue.edu.
- What is Chemical Biology?
- Fundamental and technical advances in
chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology over the
past several decades have provided unprecedented
opportunities to probe living systems at a molecular
level. These advances have led to the development of a
rapidly growing multidisciplinary field - "Chemical
Biology". Within Chemical Biology groundbreaking
chemical methodology may be applied to the elucidation of
essential biological processes. Additionally, newly
identified biological targets may drive the development
of unique chemical entities. Topics of current interest
within Chemical Biology include: design of small
molecules to interact with enzymes, hormone receptors,
biological transporters, lipid membranes or nucleic
acids, drug delivery, and chemical understanding of
disease states.
Despite the
growing importance of Chemical Biology and its popularity
at the postgraduate level, few students are exposed to
these topics as undergraduates.
- Who do we want to participate in
this Research Experience? --- You!
- This REU program in Chemical Biology will
involve nine undergraduate chemistry majors from outside
colleges participating in a ten week long program during
the Summers of 2004-2006. In this process, every effort
will be made to identify Sophomore and Junior chemistry
majors who are at colleges and universities that may not
have the opportunity to perform research at their home
institution.
Because we will be
recruiting outstanding chemistry majors, you may have
little or no background in biochemistry and biology.
Therefore, we have devised mechanisms to give you extra
training in areas relevant to Chemical Biology. This will
be accomplished in a variety of ways, including full
participation in a research project and research group,
and internal and external group activities.
- Who are the faculty?
- Each of the participating faculty members
has devised a research project that a motivated
undergraduate could accomplish in a ten week period in
the area of Chemical Biology. These faculty were chosen
either because the have a strong history of successfully
working with undergraduates, or because they are new
assistant professors who are highly motivated to work
with undergraduates in their research program.
The program will also be subjected to a thorough
evaluation, carried out by Professor Gabriela Weaver of the Purdue Chemistry department.
