Homework*

Purdue University, Fall 2005
WebCT

Most of the assigned problems will come from the problems at the end of the chapters in your textbook but you will obtain your assignment on-line (that is, they will not be announced in lectures). You will demonstrate your understanding of the material in these assigned problems by submitting your answers on-line before the POSTED DEADLINES. These assignments are considered to be a minimum requirement for learning the material in each chapter.  You should practice using additional problems from the text similar to those assigned.

Homework assignments ( http://www.purdue.edu/ecourses ).

Each of you will have an individual assignment and you will have two (2) attempts to complete the entire quiz before the deadline.  Your homework score will be the score of the HIGHEST homework set you submit.

When Should I Do Homework?

Homework has a very specific purpose:  to give you, the learner, firsthand experience in working with the content you see in lecture and in the text.  Having a specific assignment should help you keep focused on studying chemistry on a regular, daily basis.   The following guidelines should be helpful if you want to do well in a technical course such as CHM 115 which will probably involve relearning concepts or learning concepts that you did not have in your high school chemistry course.  Learning new material requires constant reinforcement which means you may have to change your study habits

  • Do some work in chemistry every day.   In fact, you should spend about 45 minutes to one (1) hour each day on each subject.
  • Work at least two chemistry problems each day.  If you are drawing a blank about the problem after 10-15 minutes, go on to another a problem.  Seek help from a graduate instructor the next day.
  • Write down your problem solutions.  It doesn't help most people to just review mentally.  You must practice if you are going to be proficient and efficient during exam times!

Problem solving involves more than just getting the correct answer to a specific question.  In addition to knowing what procedures or algorithms to use to answer a questions, problem solving also requires knowing how to deal with similar problems where the numbers and wording have been changed.

There are many other excellent problems at the end of each chapter that you can solve as you work at mastering the material.  You need to work as many problems as is necessary for you to understand the concepts, skills, and ideas.

Homework and Recitations

You will have time to ask questions and check your homework so take your WebCT homework printouts with you to recitation.  These sessions provide you with the opportunity to ask questions and work with your classmates and graduate instructor in small groups.  Recitation is not an individual tutoring session for each student.  During a 50-minute time period it probably will not be possible to answer each student's specific questions.  If you have difficulties or have questions about certain problems or want individual help, you should seek out any of the CHM 115 graduate instructors during their Office Hours.  Recitations are not the time and place to begin your homework assignment.  You are expected to have worked on the homework assignment before recitation so that you can participate and contribute to the recitation
