Molecules & Ions

We can predict the structure around an interior atom in a more complex molecule or ion using the same ideas used with simple molecules. We count the total number of atoms and the number of unshared electron pairs around an interior atom in the Lewis formula of the molecule or ion and use this to determine the Parent Structure. Then we determine the Molecular Structure from the number of atoms bonded to the interior atom.
