Dr. March and wife Susan

Carl March

Ph.D. 1980
Retired Senior Vice President, Information Technology and Biochemical Sciences at Immunex Corporation – Seattle

As an undergrad, my organic chemistry professor had been a contemporary of Mike Laskowski in grad school at Cornell. He recommended that I go get my Ph.D. with Dr. Laskowski at Purdue.

In the Laskowski lab, we had a visiting scientist, Dr. Ikunoshin (Iku) Kato. As a grad student learning my way in research, he really instilled the discipline of intense focus into everything I did at the bench.

Although the academic foundations were important, I learned to apply my mechanical aptitude to running instruments to get the most from each experiment.

My wife, Susan, and I married during my second year. She worked as a receptionist at Purdue until our first son was born as I was writing my thesis. She was also admitted to the Department of Psychology Ph.D. program. (Photo of Susan and Carl in top graphic.)

I have yet to meet someone who does not hold Purdue in high regard.
