In Memoriam: Emeritus Professor Joseph Wolinsky

Our friend and colleague, Professor Emeritus Joseph Wolinsky died in West Lafayette in July 2021 at age 90.

Dr. Wolinsky served Purdue for 44 years, joining our department in 1958. During his tenure, he received numerous teaching awards including induction into Purdue’s inaugural Book of Great Teachers along with:

Top Ten School of Science Teacher
1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996

Outstanding Teacher in School of Science
1983-1984

Outstanding Teacher by Chemical Engineering Students
1975, 1985

Purdue Chemistry’s Frank D. Martin Award
1973, 1984

AMOCO Teaching Award
1974

For more than 20 years, he was an advisor to our undergraduate majors and he chaired our Chemistry Safety Committee. Outside the department, Dr. Wolinsky served on Purdue’s Faculty Senate and was a mentor at Wiley Hall. He published more than 90 articles before retiring in 2002.

Joe is survived by wife Sheila of nearly 70 years, four children, and six grandchildren.
