Jon’s teaching and research specializes in undergraduate chemistry education. Jon has taught numerous undergraduate chemistry classes (both lab and lecture), with a significant focus on General Chemistry.
Jon has been instrumental in modernizing Purdue’s General Chemistry laboratory curriculum as part of the Chaney-Hale Hall of Science in West Lafayette and the Academic Success Building in Indianapolis. The curriculum makes full use of the state-of-the-art facilities and technologies, such as wireless Bluetooth probes and sensors, digital lab manuals, and iPads for each student in lab. Undergraduate research students with Dr. Rienstra-Kiracofe have development several new General Chemistry Experiments used by thousands of students each semester.
Jon has also developed two new courses: CHM 49000: The Nuclear Age , is a college of science Great Issue course. CHM 11530: V irtual Laboratory is an online General Chemistry laboratory that employs lab realistic virtual experiments each developed in collaboration with the Purdue Envision Center and undergraduate chemistry and computer science students.
