HMIS Information

A labeling system called "Hazardous Materials Identification System," HMIS, was developed by the National Paint & Coatings Association (NPCA).

HMIS labels are not related to WHMIS, which is a Canadian system.

HMIS labels are not related to http://phmsa.dot.gov/hazmat a U.S. DOT information management system also called HMIS.

HMIS labels are not related to NFPA 704 labels althought the two labeling systems look a bit alike. Both have three colored sections, blue/red/yellow. HOWEVER the NFPA diamond is intended to communicate information to fire fighters and represent fire or other emergency conditions. The HMIS label numbers are meant to convey full health/safety information under non-emergency conditions.
